Sticking with Silverlight thanks to Windows 8

Windows 8, Silverlight and HTML 5 - they rock together. MS is headed in the right direction and I can not wait to be developing applications for Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

The more I read about the two technologies the more I see that they can compliment each other. Silverlight is already mature. HTML 5 is still being implemented. There are awesome tools already built to work with Silverlight VS 2010 and Expression Blend. HTML 5 will also be supported in both of these tools. MS support for Line of Business applications has been awesome for ASP.Net and Silverlight. HTML 5 looks like it will be great for rapidly developing web sites that are media content rich. I read numerous articles stating that they expect the audio and video tags to become as ubiquitous the img tag from HTML\XHTML.

The same technology needed to develop web applications can be applied to writing Windows 8 applications for the WinRT environment. I am looking forward to the future with MS and HTML 5.

Based on the information I have so far I plan on sticking with Siliverlight for the Rockin CMS-LMS Site Admin Tool.

If you have experience with Silverlight or Blend please join us on codeplex.

SilverLight - More questions than answers right now.

Pluralsight's Silverlight 4.0 Core course is huge about 6 hrs 20 mins.. I completed the content from Intro through Input Handling (approx 2 hours). It looks like producing content that has a dynamic layout can be achieved with minimal effort. I am not convinced that it is the only way to go. I need to look at the data-binding and out of browser capabilities. I also need to hit the Microsoft Forums and Blogs to find out how much energy MS plans to put into Silverlight now that HTML 5 is being widely accepted. What does SilverLight provide that HTML 5 does\will not.

Silverlight Tonight

I will be checking out the Pluralsight coursers that covers Silverlight development tonight. Hopefully the courses will be helpful enough to start on the Silverlight admin module for the Rockin CMS-LMS Combo project on codeplex.

I will post about anything I find interesting while going through the coursers including links to how it is used in the real world.

Next Steps: Rockin CMS-LMS Combo

Rockin Cms-Lms Combo team is making progress.

The team has its first new member a technical writer, Josephapuzzi. We still need people to make the site look good. We need a Web Designer and Graphic artist. Hopefully capable of using Blend/Silverlight to make the UI shine. I am trying for an all Microsoft project. I am willing to consider other options like Flash or Photoshop. The steps outlined below are ones that I would like to make progress on this week.
  1. Continue to Build Team
  2. Create New Discussions to brainstorm approach
  3. Work with our new technical writer to formally document long and short term goals
  4. Update Source to Correctly reflect dependencies and add links to MS Tools / Windows Platform Installer

Pluralsight - Rocks!

I have been using Pluralsight training now for 2 months. There is a ton of content and it is diverse in both topic and skill level. Too many training sites target the beginners. I have been very impressed with the intermediate and advanced courses.

The new project Rockin CMS-LMS Combo will feature techniques that I have learned from Pluralsight. I will provide examples about what works well and which courses helped with the develpment of the project.

Rockin CMS-LMS Combo On CodePlex

I have started a project on CodePlex. This CMS-LMS open-source project will allow me to lead a project using many of the concepts that I have used successfully in Enterprize products. I would like to form a small team - 4-6 people that can work to create an awesome product using C#, MVC, Razor and Silverlight.

If you are interested in helping develop this solution then please visit the project on CodePlex and let me know.

All about IT

I love creating software that manages information and presents it in efficient and meaningful ways. I am looking forward to providing examples of the work I do and sharing lessons learned. I have been writing software professionally since 1998. My first tasks were department level office automation and Microsoft Access tasks. I have developed an electronic classroom for the United States Marine Corps and am currently working on projects for STOPS Enterprizes, LLC. Those projects include Client Scripting which provides a Client Specific-Scripted approach to Intake and Scheduling which provides a queue based workflow.
